How to Create Outdoor Winter Games for Children

While winter can be chilly, it also can bring plenty of diversions in the great white snowy outdoors. Bring some children and their friends, creativity and plenty of energy for a splendid afternoon of building snowmen, sledding or even just some gliding on the ice. Here are some great ideas to entertain kids of all ages.

Step 1

Host a snowman making contest. This is great for birthday parties or even an early New Year's day party. Gather together about three children per group if there is a large number of children. Be sure that there are extra scarves, carrots, items for buttons and eyes, food coloring, twigs or anything else creative that the children can come up with to create their snowman. Have a digital camera on hand for taking pictures. Have another adult judge the contest and give away small party favors as prizes.

Step2
Take up a winter battle in snow wars. Split up the children into two teams. Let them build snow forts or other places to hide. Be sure that you include rules before the games even begin. Stress that no ice should be inside the snowballs, and to not throw snowballs to hurt anybody. Let them know that any child who throws with force or intentions to hurt will be kicked out of the game. Play the snow war like tag. Once hit, the player is out. The team with the most players left is the winner. Finish off the game with plenty of hot chocolate and some time by the fire or warm heat.
